Rolo & Smarties

Disappointing

I wanted this to be good. It sounded good on the menu, and it looked good when it arrived. It was not (particularly) good when I tried it. It’s not that it’s bad really, I’d drink it again if you gave me one, but my experience when consuming it was one of disappointment.

It doesn’t taste that much like caramel. Or coconut or cashew. All flavours that were specifically mentioned on the menu. Serving this shake with a pile of Rolos & Smarties on top could be excellent! It adds texture and colour and character. But they’re also fairly difficult to get at if I’m also not provided at least one utensil. Straws are really not the best tool for getting smooth round items out of a glass! I had to commandeer a fork from the table (since there weren’t any spoons).

I wanted to try this as a comparison to the vegan caramel & rum shake I previously got from Byron’s in Cambridge so I opted for the added splash of spiced light rum. Sadly though, there’s no contest. This isn’t even remotely as creamy and while the caramel taste is in there, it’s quite subtle. You can taste the rum at least, but that’s a low bar.

Texture-wise the shake was fairly thin, as if they added too much milk. There were bits in the shake but I really don’t think they were all chocolate. My best guess is that they were ice crystals, which does not instill confidence in the quality of the ice-cream they used.
